Scholarship Award Recipients Get Guaranteed Internship Stint With Top Industry Leaders
Subang Jaya, 27 September 2018 – Taylor’s University’s commitment to help students embrace the future is entrenched in its flagship Taylor’s World Class Scholarship (TWCS) award programme that strives to nurture ‘future-ready’ young minds by empowering them to co-curate a degree programme that matches their personal strengths, values and life goals.
This year, through the TWCS platform, a total of 21 bright young minds were awarded a full scholarship to pursue their undergraduate programme in various disciplines such as computer science, engineering, business, communications and more. The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Steven Sim, presented the awards to the scholars during the award ceremony which was held at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus today.
The amount distributed by Taylor’s University this year brings the TWCS’ total scholarship awarded to-date to RM 18.9 million, benefiting 199 budding scholars, since its inception in 2006.
“The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought about profound changes in the economic landscape, changing business models, the nature of jobs and the hard skills needed by industry. The biggest challenge we face now is helping our young people acquire transferable skills needed to take on future jobs,” said YB Steven Sim at the awards ceremony.
“As Industry 4.0 expands, our universities must embrace passion-driven, self-directed learning process to ensure young people are motivated to learn and innovate. At this junction, I would like to commend Taylor’s University and the TWCS industry partners for stepping up in their role of shaping well-rounded individuals who are able to understand and respond to the needs of the country and the world,” the deputy minister elaborated.
Taylor’s University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Michael Driscoll said that in order to attain and sustain relevance in the future, our graduates must go beyond the hard skills traditionally required by industry.
“They need to build competencies or soft skills including problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation, to allow them to participate meaningfully in the digitally driven economy,” he said.
Setting itself apart from other bursary programmes, TWCS offers young minds a holistic, broad-based higher education experience which enables scholars to co-curate their higher education according their strengths and career goals, while at the same time obtaining an internship opportunity with leading industry partners.
The strict evaluation process of the TWCS award programme means that applicants need to fulfil stringent entry requirements by proving their academic excellence [which includes achieving a minimum of 35 points in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM); an ATAR of 85 and above (for the South Australian Matriculation programme); ABB and above in the Cambridge A Levels or a minimum GPA 3.33 in three subjects for Sijil Pelajaran Tinggi Malaysia (STPM)] and be actively involved in extracurricular activities in order to qualify for the first step of the process.
Shortlisted candidates are required to attend an interview and presentation in front of a panel of judges comprised of academicians and representatives of TWCS partner companies. At this phase the committee shortlists candidates who portray positive attitudes, leadership qualities, English proficiency and good communication skills.
Currently in its 13th year, the Taylor’s World Class Scholarship award continues to receive strong support from international and local industry leaders in the field of architecture, biosciences, business, communication, design, engineering and hospitality to join in the movement of building talents for the nation.
This year’s new participating corporations include Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Microsoft, Maybank, Nestlé and Oracle who join BASF Petronas, BDO, BMW, CIMB, DwP, Edelman, L’Oréal, Mandarin Oriental, Unilever and Veritas as TWCS partners.
