Malaysia is set to make history as the Sunway University Cheerleading Team becomes the first ever Malaysian team to compete at the prestigious FISU World University Championship Cheerleading 2026, taking place from 5 to 7 June 2026 in Gothenburg.
Organised by the Swedish University Sports Federation, Swedish Cheerleading Federation, and Gothenburg & Co, the championship reflects the core values championed by the International University Sports Federation — excellence, passion, and team spirit — while showcasing the academic and cultural diversity represented by participating institutions from across the globe.
The historic participation marks a defining milestone for Malaysian university sports and cheerleading, as the Sunway University Cheerleading Team proudly carries the Jalur Gemilang onto the global stage for the first time in the championship’s history. Representing Malaysia, the team will compete alongside student athletes from universities across the world in a vibrant celebration of athletic excellence, passion, teamwork, and cultural diversity.
To commemorate the team’s historic participation, the university recently held a special send-off ceremony on campus, bringing together university leaders, students, staff, and supporters to wish the athletes success as they prepare for the tournament in Sweden.
Speaking on behalf of the team, President of the Sunway University Cheerleading Team, Nicholas Low Kah Hung, who is also a student from Bachelor of Business Victoria University @ Sunway, shared, “We are proud and excited to represent Malaysia at the FISU World University Championship Cheerleading. We will strive to give our very best and make our country proud on the international stage. We would also like to thank Sunway University for its continuous support throughout our journey. This opportunity allows us to showcase the spirit, dedication, and teamwork of Malaysian student athletes while carrying the Malaysian flag with pride.”
Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee, Chief Executive Officer of the Sunway Education Group, added, “This is a defining moment for Malaysia and for Sunway University. This opportunity for our cheerleading team to represent the nation at the international stage speaks to the remarkable talent, resilience and determination of our Sunway students and we wish them all the very best in Gothenburg”.
As a mission-driven, 5th generation university, Sunway University remains committed to nurturing well rounded graduates who excel beyond academics by empowering students through opportunities in leadership, sports, innovation, and global engagement. The team’s participation further highlights Malaysia’s growing presence in international university sports while inspiring future generations of Malaysian student athletes to pursue excellence and global opportunities with confidence and ambition.
