About Aberystwyth University

Lovingly dubbed Aber, the Aberstwyth University was first established in 1867 by the Welsh University committee in the form of purchasing the uncompleted Castle hotel. Its following years were in full swing, struggling through the Great Depression before stablising in 1872. Fondly known as The People's University, Aber became the first institution in Wales to offer courses in Chemistry, Comparative Philology, English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Geography, German, Greek, Hebrew (also Arabic, Syrian, Sanskrit, Turkishand Persian), History, Italian, Latin, Logicand Philosophy, Mathematics, National Sciences and Astronomy.

Since then, Aberstwyth University has not slowed down (even in its third century of operating) in spreading high quality education in one of the most unique places in the UK. As a participant of the Erasmus scheme, students can expand studies to other parts of Europe or participate in exchange programmes to Aber from their own universities.
