About James Madison University

It's not just a slogan. It is Madison — a living, evolving university where change is the status quo. Equipped with the power that knowledge gives, JMU students, faculty and alumni work toward a brighter future in nearly every sector of global society. We expand the world's knowledge through innovative and cutting-edge research, widely available to our undergraduates. We explore new worlds through global-centric perspectives and study abroad programs. We devise new ways to generate prosperity. We help those struggling with disease, poverty, handicaps or lack of opportunity through science, education and service.

With the mentoring of faculty whose first love is teaching, we help students fulfill their destinies. JMU offers each student a future of significance — not an education of mere prestige, but an extraordinary education of exceptional scholarship, inventive thinking, unparalleled attention to the world community, a university-wide enthusiasm for teaching, and a commitment to student success.

Harrisonburg, an independent city in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia is home to James Madison Universityand Eastern Mennonite University. Previously known as Rocktown, Harrisonburg was named for Thomas Harrison, a son of English settlers, who settled in the Shenandoah Valley in 1737.

Harrisonburg provides visitors with unimaginable culinary options, a flourishing arts community, endless outdoor adventures, a lively downtown and a diverse mix of performances, annual events and festivals (Downtown Renaissance). In addition, the city is host to a variety of ethnic groups, including Hispanics, who account for 16% of Harrisonburg’s population.

First Year Housing

All first year students are required to live in university residence halls for the entirety of their first academic year at James Madison University (fall and spring semesters). Exceptions to the first year residency requirement may be made for:

  • First year students who commute daily within a 60-mile radius from the permanent home of their parents or legal guardians.
  • First-year students who are 21 years of age or older.
  • Married first year students.
  • Requests for exceptions must be made in writing to the Director of Residence Life.

Transfer Student

New transfer students who sign housing contracts will be assigned to an upperclass room in the following buildings: Ashby, Chandler, Converse, Maple, Oak, Shenandoah, Wampler, White, and Willow. There will also be limited space available in the Apartments on Grace in 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom units for 2 or 4 residents.  After signing a housing contract, transfer students will be able to complete a Lifestyle Questionnaire and select campus area preferences, which will help our office make assignments.  Over 95% of rooms available for transfer students are double rooms, so you will most likely have a roommate next year. You will be assigned with another upperclass student or a new transfer student as a roommate.

Upperclass Student

One of the great things about coming back to campus as an upperclass student is that you get to pick your own space! Students that have signed housing contracts get to complete the Online Room Selection process after Spring Break. The following halls will be available for upperclass students to choose from during Online Room Selection this spring:

  • Apartments on Grace
  • Ashby
  • Converse
  • Shenandoah B side
  • Wampler
  • White
