About Central College

Founded in 1853, Central College of Pella, Iowa, is a private, residential four-year liberal arts college known for its academic rigor and strength in global experiential learning, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), sustainability education, athletics success and tradition, and leadership and service. Central continues to value its long-standing relationship with the Reformed Church in America. The college participates in NCAA Division III athletics and is a member of the Iowa Conference. Central is an active part of the Greater Des Moines region and just two minutes from Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake.

Central College is located in Pella, Iowa, a picturesque community of 10,000 people set amid gently  rolling hills just 40 miles southeast of Des Moines and two minutes from Lake Red Rock. The town’s  flower-lined streets, distinctive Dutch architecture, charming retail shops and famous bakeries attract tourists from around the world. Pella was ranked the 19th-best small town in the U.S. by Livability. Des Moines was ranked the No. 2 best city in the U.S. for jobs by Forbes.

The annual Tulip Festival, celebrating the town's Dutch heritage, attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year. Pella's unique blend of sophistication and small-town intimacy have been noted in several  national publications, including The New Yorker and Midwest Living magazines.

Accommodation

Living on campus is an important part of the educational experience at Central. Our residential facilities create an environment for students to study, socialize, become more self-aware and develop meaningful relationships, leadership, decision-making and communication skills.

All students are required to room and board with the college for the entirety of their time at Central. Exceptions may be granted to people who are married; have children; are 23 years or older; or are military veterans.
