About University of California, Santa Barbara

University of California, Santa Barbara (also known as UC Santa Barbara or UCSB) is a public research university and one of the 10 general campuses of the University of California system. UCSB joined the University of California system in 1944 and is the third-oldest general-education campus in the system.

The university is a comprehensive doctoral university and divided into five colleges and schools offering 87 undergraduate degrees and 55 graduate degrees. Courses offered are majority focuses on Materials, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Marine Science Institute, Geography, History, and Theater and Dance.

UCSB is currently ranked 34th in the world and 26th nationally by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The 2013 edition of U.S. News & World Report ranked UCSB as the 41th best university in the nation, tied for 4th best of the UC schools and the 10th best public university in the United States. In 2013 Kiplinger ranked UCSB 14th out of the top 100 best-value public colleges and universities in the nation, and 4th in California.

Campus information

UCSB Library serves the students, faculty, and staff of the University of California, Santa Barbara and members of the Santa Barbara community. The library offers more than 3 million of printed volumes, 30,000 of eletronic journals, and 34,450 of e-books.

The UCSB Recreation Center has two swimming pools, two gymnasia, two weight rooms, two squash courts and five racquetball courts. The expansion includes an additional weight room, multi-purpose gym, climbing wall, jacuzzi, pottery studio, classroom and additional locker facilities.

There are also eight residence halls at UCSB, seven of which are located at the main campus, and one, Santa Catalina, is located near the entrance to West Campus north of Isla Vista.

Santa Barbara, California is located 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Santa Barbara’s location on the shore of the Pacific Ocean provides extraordinary weather, making the city ideal for outdoor recreation including surfing, hiking, kayaking, swimming, biking, running and more.
