Curriculum

  • Courses emphasize empirical methods and conceptual analysis, as well as specific research skills relevant to many types of jobs and further professional training. History also introduces students to various societal settings and diverse types of controversial public issues, thus contributing actively to both liberal education and professional development. Earning a B.A. in History is a frequent choice for students headed toward law school (or toward doctoral work in history or a related field), but our program’s emphasis on writing and analytical skills provide excellent preparation for careers in business, government, associations, foreign service, research, journalism, and in the growing field of “public history” through museums and media.
  • Students in this major complete 96 units, including the required general education course, “Global Histories” (79-104), beyond which there are three required courses: “The Development of American Culture” (79-240), an introductory research seminar entitled “Historical Evidence and Interpretation” (79-360), and a senior capstone research seminar entitled “Advanced Studies in History” (79-420). The curriculum can be completed in as few as four semesters and is flexible enough to serve the needs of both primary and additional majors.
